Book Cover-My Name Is Mina |
One day I was sitting in my tree and listening to the birds and writing fantastical things when I noticed a girl sat on the bench outside our house, she had a journal like mine, but she looked older than me. She sat on the bench and seemed to slip out of herself like a bird flying high above the world. She sat for what seemed like forever and didn’t move a mussel, Whisper the cat seemed very interested in her jacket pocket, all the time I wanted to say something, wanted to know what she was doing, then finally she woke up, her bird had landed.
‘Hello,’ I said, quietly,
She turned around,
‘My name is mina,’ I said, trusting her face almost amidietly.
‘I’m Stargirl,’ she said cheerily,
‘Is that your real name?’ I said confused,
‘I picked it myself,’ she said as if it was a perfectly normal thing for someone to pick their own name at the age of about 13.
‘What was your name originally?’ I asked intrigued with it all,
‘Susan,’ she replied,
I held in a giggle, ‘so you were Susan, then Stargirl?’ I asked,
‘No, Susan, then MudPie, then PocketMouse, then Stargirl,’ she said casually.
‘What makes you change it?’ I asked I
‘It just changes when it doesn’t fit any more’ she said, just as casually.
‘What about school?’ I wondered
‘I don’t go to school,’
My eyes lit up, ‘Your home schooled?’
‘Sure am!’
A chilly breeze came upon us, I shivered, ‘Do you want to come in, it’s very cold out here,’
‘Yes please!’ she said, sounding desperate to get out of the cold.
We walked inside together, seeing my mum look confused,
‘This is Stargirl,’ I said,
She looked even more confused than before,
‘Real name,’ I said as we walked into my bedroom.
When we got to my bedroom we talked of school, and motto’s and a boy called leo, about strawberry banana milkshakes, a girl called Dootsie and an amazing lady called Betty Lou. We also had fun with her pet rat called cinnamon.
I like the name stargirl,
STARGIRL!
What a wonderful name to have!
